Is Salmon High In Purines?

Fresh Salmon

Salmon along with other foods such as liver, turkey, and trout contain a moderately high amount of purines and therefore should be consumed in limited amounts, especially by those with gout or people who are at risk for developing problems with gout. Salmon is also very high in protein and although protein is certainly good for you, it can lead to certain problems such as the buildup of uric acid in the body that can lead to gout which is a form of arthritis.

If you do not have gout or do not think that you are at risk for developing gout, it is okay to consume salmon on a regular basis. It contains lots of things that our bodies need to stay healthy, including omega-3 fatty acids which are good for brain function among other things.
