Are Tomatoes Dyed?

A lot of people are unaware of the fact that many commercially available fruits and vegetables are actually colored with food dye. This makes them more appealing to the eyes of consumers.

What about tomatoes? Are tomatoes dyed?

Yes, some commercially available tomatoes are dyed with a type of red food coloring. This makes them appear more ripe for a longer period of time, even though the actual state of the vegetable is unchanged.

While this food coloring is supposedly harmless to consumers, many people do not like eating foods which have unnecessary chemicals added to them, and prefer to buy organic foods instead.

  1. Do you have any source for this info? I have been encountering tomatoes in the restaurant industry this winter (jan 2023) that seem bizarrely red colored. Like the color is in the wrong places in the tomato and it is too vibrant compared to natural tomatoes. Even the juice is a bright strawberry red when tomato juice is not usually very red.
