Cherries are considered to be what is called a “stone fruit”, which means that it has a fleshy outer appearance as well as a pit inside. This fruit is actually closely related to the plum, originating from the same family.

Though there is still some debate as to whether cherries are a fruit or a vegetable, they are most definitely a fruit.

Cherries come from the genus Prunus and besides being related to plums, apricots and peaches are also in the same family. All of these stone fruits are closely related with some of them even having similar appearances as well as other common characteristics.
